Church History

Holsey sinai cme church history

There were four CME Churches in the Rome area in the late 1800s; Rush Chapel, Mount Zion, Holsey Temple, and Mount Sinai. As time went on, attempts were made to unite the churches. Rush Chapel merged with Mount Sinai in the early 1900's, and in 1966 Mount Sinai located on Dempsey in Shannon, Ga and Holsey Temple located on North Broad Street at Five Point, Rome, Ga merged thus forming Holsey Sinai CME Church. The roots of this church run deep as it is an offspring of two faithful congregations. We call ourselves a church family because we are a "UNION", coming together to worship "GOD" without prejudice, loving everybody and believing that God will see us through whatever obstacle we may have to bear.

In the early years the circuit was served by pastors such as Rev. B.B. Martin, Rev. J.W. Thornton, Rev. J.E. Buggs, Rev. J.N. Bailey, Rev. T.C. Cunningham,  and Rev. F.P. Griggs. Since the merger in 1966, Rev. Mance Jackson, Rev. Harvey, and Rev. C.C. Brawner have pastored Holsey Sinai. During the tenure of Rev. Brawner, the new church was built on the corner of East First and Watters Streets. The first service was held in May 1970. After Rev. Brawner's retirement, Rev. T.A. Jones pastored from 1972-1974, Rev. R.B. Shorts from 1974-1975, Rev. O. Dewayne Walker from 1975-1980, Rev. Carlton Mahone from 1980-1986. Rev. Bernard Kynes from 1986-1991, Rev. Roy Williams from 1991-1994, Rev. Charles Richard from 1995-1995, Rev. Christopher Johnson from 1995-1996, Rev. Curtis L. Russell from 1996 -2007, Rev. Bobby J. Hall Sr. from 2007-2014, Rev.
